The staff was incredible, warm and welcoming. The food was creative and very very good. The ambience on the outside patio was delightful...we had plenty of space and were not crowded by the other patrons. I had the best Old fashioned cocktail that I have ever had, and was enthralled by the big, crystal clear ice cube.
Ultimately, this is a restaurant, so my rating comes down to the food. While exceptional service is had here - well on-par with many other 1* restaurants - the flavors and textures of the food didn't align with the preparation descriptions. The food is good. Astounding? Markedly unique? Head and shoulders above others? I...hesitate to pass judgement. Came here to celebrate some recent milestones in our lives, and were very warmly greeted by the staff - a common theme throughout the night. With a reservation, we were promptly seated in the new (we hadn't been since it first was constructed) outdoor area. This place is tres mignonne - very cute. The service throughout the night was impeccable and friendly - not forced like some venues may feel when being a little overly amicable with the patrons. When it came to the menu, we went primarily with the recommendations of the server based on the descriptions offered on preparation. It was here, however, where expectations fell a little flat - while every dish was good, none truly stood out in its exceptionalism. When I've been to other 1*s across the world, there was some relation to the term "fine dining" - it's an emphasis on details and everything is done to serve a purpose to the dish. While beautifully plated, each dish left me wondering, "Well, how did X ingredient contribute to this? The server said this was done as part of preparation - was that necessary? Is that noticed?". Again, the food wasn't poor - it just simply felt at times to be missing its mark.
Jeune et Jolie was such an experience! The service was great and the food was even better!! Four course prefixed meal and we got the croquet madame to start. That is a MUST get!
***** Nouvelle Cuisine (luxurious and innovative) ***** Vibe/Ambiance (relaxed/cool breeze) ***** Staff/Service (genuine and attentive) ***** Wow-factor (outer body experience) **** Value (worth it) A masterpiece from San Diego's hottest chef's by the sea; Executive Chef Eric Bost and Chef de Cuisine Eric Ruck run the culinary workhorse of a kitchen Jeune et Jolie. Featuring a unique cozy dining experience where your dinner is prepared feet just away from your table (unless you choose the more intimate outdoor seating). Craft your own four course prix fixe meal, with a smattering of fresh, hearty ingredients such as A5 wagyu, iberico pork, uni, black truffle, and wines from around the world in a hip and friendly atmosphere. Although the menu is advertised as 4 courses, they start you off with an amuse buche offering, and an opportunity to add a raw bar plate, and they generously (spoiler alert) surprise you with a complimentary post-desert sweet bite to potentially grace your evening in seven heavenly courses! Rather than opt for the traditional wine pairing, we went for the unadvertised, ultra radical cocktail pairing - super fun! Who knew an Old Fashion would pair perfectly with Wagyu, sweetbreads swiss chards, and mushrooms all atop a rich borderlaise? This is a special occasion retreat where you can totally nerd out over the menu, or simply relax and enjoy truly fine dining.
Another amazing premier Michelin star French restaurant. What a fantastic meal! In such category of restaurants - you are going for the experience and the meal. The ambience was cozy and the music was playing from tape (those of us old enough to know reel tape music). The waiters and servers were excellent and attentive to all our needs. The fixed four course menu was spot on in terms of taste, portion, and presentation. The bread service and accompanying butter was to die for. They also gave us a surprise extra desert of chocolate and macaron. Definitely will come back here again. There is ample parking behind the restaurant. If yo want a quieter atmosphere, the outdoor seating is quieter. We sat inside and it was pure entertainment to see the cooks creating their gastronomic art in the open kitchen. They had three selections of calvados for desert.
A caveat: my ratings are relative to the caliber of the restaurant, so a four-star review of a fine dining restaurant with a Michelin star is not the same as a four-star review of a restaurant with an above-average or average reputation. So this review should be compared to my review of Commis, if you want to compare apples to apples. So let's begin: One of the stars of our evening at Jeune et Jolie was the staff. Our evening began with a warm welcome from the host and (I believe) the owner or General Manager who chatted with us while we waited to be seated. Once seated, the service was everything you'd expect from a Michelin-rated restaurant without being stuffy or pretentious. Our server, who had just relocated to California from Mississippi, was a delight from the moment we walked in to our departure two hours later. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the food and wine (as were the soms), and it was clear he genuinely enjoyed sharing his love of fine cuisine with us, expressing a reverence for each offering we found charming and contagious. He also seemed to intuitively know when to engage with us and when to give us some time to ourselves, striking the perfect balance between the two throughout the evening. The rest of the wait staff also kept a vigilant eye on our table and made sure we had what we needed exactly when we needed it. The decor inside is beautiful: understated mauve velvet makes the booths both elegant and comfy. The open kitchen showcased cooking at its most finely tuned, with the team responding "oui" in unison each time a dish was ordered. ("Oui" was a lovely departure from the more common "Yes chef," which can be grating over time.) The food: surprisingly, the food itself was a bit of a mixed bag. While every dish was exquisitely plated and beautiful to look at, a few were truly exceptional while the others were just good. The shrimp from the raw bar was exceptional: flavorful and perfectly cooked. For the first course, I had the tuna crudo and it was spectacular. Each bite had a bright variety of flavors (the strawberry was an unexpected but perfect partner). The cubed raw tuna was placed in a marbled green shiso-oil infused bath that was as delicious as it was beautiful and unique. This was probably my favorite dish of the evening. My partner had the melon-caviar dish for this course and it was also superb. The rich sauce and salty caviar complimented the miniature melon balls, providing the perfect balance between sweet and savory. Other courses: We had the scallops and pork for the second course. The scallop dish was excellent, the scallops cooked to absolute perfection. The pork was one of the dishes that was a bit of a disappointment. A few of the slices were overcooked--dry and tough, which was startling. However the accompanying sauce and one fatty slice with a crispy rind were superb. The bread served with a bee pollen, lemon-infused butter was also one of the stars of our meal. We moaned audibly as we bit into the fluffy center topped off by a delicate but crisp outer crust. For our third course, we had the fish and Wagu beef. The fish was our least favorite dish. The foam was beautiful, punctuated by bright fruit and savory treasures, but the fish itself was slightly overcooked, and not terribly flavorful. The Wagu made up for the fish in spades as it was flavorful, cooked to perfection, and accompanied by a bordelaise sauce that made me consider licking my plate clean. Along with the tuna crudo, this dish--simply but perfectly prepared--was exquisite. My only note: the Wagu was accompanied by sweetbreads that weren't terribly memorable, which was a missed opportunity. The desserts were delicious. My favorite was the Violet, which combined creme fraiche with a bright plum sorbet. It was decadent without making us feel weighed down. We also had the Cerise, which included a cherry sorbet snuggled between two nougety chunks of white chocolate. The Cerise was good, but didn't wow me. I also ordered the reserve wine pairing, which was the equivalent of two glasses of wine over four courses. The best of the four was the 2000 Closerie du Pelan, which was divine and paired beautifully with the Wagu beef. The other pairings were less memorable especially the 'Babushka' syrah rose, which I could have skipped altogether. Overall, we had a delightful time and enjoyed the relaxed yet refined atmosphere that accompanied some very good food. Our server alone was worth the visit, and the Closerie du Pelan, tuna, melon, bread, and Wagu made the evening extra special.
Wow what an incredible dinner! My husband booked a reso a few weeks ago for my birthday and the entire staff made us feel so special. The hostess wished me a happy birthday upon checking in and as we got seated I was given a birthday card signed by some of the staff! Then when the server came she gave two glasses of champagne to toast. This restaurant is BEAUTIFUL as soon as we walked in my eyes went straight to the pink couches. Sooooo cute! I love the open kitchen so you can see the chefs working and plating, and also hear them all shout "oui!" in unison. The entire wait staff was friendly & attentive. This was expected since they have a Michelin star, but it was such a smooth & intimate experience from beginning to end. We had fresh plates & flatware for each dish and waters were refilled before I even had the thought to ask. My husband and I both picked different items from each course so we could taste almost everything on their summer menu. Everything was plated beautifully and we loved the variety in flavors. Getting a fish in one course and a red meat in another was the perfect combo! The bread in between courses 1 & 2 was soooo good. The bee pollen butter that came with it was heavenly. We also got one of the seafood platters which I'd recommend! We didn't do a wine pairing this time but we did order a delicious bottle of Sancerre. We will probably make a reso here once a season so we can try the different menus. We loved our dinner here and would recommend to anyone that is looking for exceptional service and food.
This was a wonderful dinner experience. To start out, they have amazing service here and have a dedicated sommelier, a waiter, and a secondary waiter for your table. Everyone is very knowledgeable about food, what it should pair well with, and you can tell that they all really enjoy working for this restaurant. The food itself is nothing short of spectacular. The Quail in particular stood out to me. The most tender quail I've ever had, layered on the bottom with a small cut of sausage to add in some salt flavor. I ate outdoors, but it felt relaxing, there were numerous plants and succulents surrounding you. Very reasonable price point for a one star Michelin restaurant, and better service here than Addison, which imo is overpriced. The wine here is good quality organic French wine. Tried some new varietals that were unique that I will order for my wine fridge.
What a lovely outdoor area! We sat outside and were very warm and comfortable as all the heaters were on as well as the fireplace. Our server Gavin was such a joy, we adored him so much! All the staff and helpers were so pleasant and attentive and seemed to really take their jobs seriously, which is so rare these days. I would give 10 stars just for service alone. The food was great and the presentation so pretty. They sent unexpected treats between our servings which were delightful, especially the little loaf of bread with the amazing buttery spread that had a hint of lemon. *Un - the melon was so refreshing *Deux - this dish was great but especially the one piece of pork belly with the crispy top and soft fatty and meat parts *trois - the crispy skin on the poisson was yummy *quatre - abricot was tart and citrusy and fluffy on the inside. The food alone is really good but the added excellent service and elegant surroundings makes for the most wonderful experience.
The food was amazing. $120 for a set menu of 4 courses. My friend and I each got something different so we could share. We had surprise dishes in between. The service, presentation, taste and quality was exceptional. It's an open kitchen, you can see the chefs cranking out the dishes and the team lined up to be hands on deck. Reminded me of the show, The Bear. They offer absinthe and cocktails. I asked for sweet, citrusy, refreshing drink and was recommended French 75. Had gin, grapefruit, calamansi and sparking wine. So good that I had two glasses. I get side effects of extreme thirst, dry mouth and headache to msg. Although I don't think they have msg but I believe it had a lot of sodium. So much that you don't taste it, the dishes weren't salty, but the after math totally got me that night. Parking in this area are along the street. We didn't have any issues. People seem to come and go quickly.
